A classic Ukiyo-e woodblock print by Torii Kiyonaga, depicting a social scene at a teahouse in Yushima during the Edo period.
This woodblock print by Torii Kiyonaga belongs to the series Scenes of Ten Teahouses, a collection that captures the social atmosphere of Edo-period Japan. Kiyonaga is recognised for his tall, graceful figures and his ability to integrate human subjects with their architectural surroundings. In this composition, the artist depicts a scene at Yushima, a location known for its teahouses and proximity to the Yushima Tenjin Shrine.
The print features three figures arranged in a relaxed, social setting. A man sits between two women, his posture suggesting a casual conversation. The architectural elements, such as the stone lantern and the wooden structure of the teahouse, provide a sense of place and depth. Kiyonaga employs a balanced colour palette, using soft greens, muted reds, and blacks to define the garments and the environment. The lines are clean and precise, characteristic of the artist's mature style during the 1780s.
Kiyonaga was a master of the bijin-ga genre, which focuses on the depiction of beautiful women. Unlike some of his contemporaries who favoured exaggerated features, Kiyonaga preferred a more naturalistic approach to anatomy and movement. His work often reflects the daily life of the urban population in Edo, documenting the fashion, customs, and leisure activities of the time. This print offers a glimpse into the refined social culture of the period, where teahouses functioned as important public spaces for gathering and entertainment. The composition demonstrates his skill in managing multiple figures within a confined space, ensuring that each individual remains distinct while contributing to the overall narrative of the scene. The print remains a representative example of the technical and aesthetic standards achieved by Ukiyo-e artists during the late eighteenth century.
