This woodblock print by Torii Kiyonobu I depicts the kabuki actor Yamanaka Heikuro I. Kiyonobu I was a founder of the Torii school, which specialised in producing promotional materials for the kabuki theatres of Edo. His work is characterised by the 'tan-e' technique, where hand-applied orange-red pigment (tan) provides contrast against the monochrome ink lines.
The composition captures the actor in a dynamic pose, a hallmark of the 'aragoto' (rough style) of acting popularised in the Genroku era. The actor holds a mirror, reflecting his own exaggerated expression. This self-referential gesture serves to emphasise the artifice of the theatre. The bold, calligraphic lines define the actor's muscular form and the stylised patterns of his costume. The background features a simple screen decorated with pine motifs, providing a sense of space without distracting from the central figure.
Kiyonobu I focused on the physical presence of the performer. His prints were often sold as souvenirs to theatre-goers, documenting specific roles and performances. The print exhibits the characteristic aesthetic of early Ukiyo-e, where the emphasis remains on the graphic power of the line rather than atmospheric depth. The paper shows the natural ageing typical of prints from this period, with the tan pigment having faded to a soft, earthy tone over the centuries.
