A refined woodblock print by Suzuki Harunobu depicting a youth in the guise of the Buddhist deity Monju, seated upon a stylised shishi.
Suzuki Harunobu was a pioneer of the nishiki-e, or brocade print, which allowed for the use of multiple colours in a single woodblock composition. This work depicts a young man adopting the guise of Monju Bosatsu, the Buddhist deity of wisdom. In traditional iconography, Monju is often shown seated upon a shishi, or mythical lion. Here, Harunobu replaces the divine lion with a stylised, decorative representation, grounding the spiritual subject within the contemporary aesthetic of the Edo period. The figure holds a writing brush and a small box, suggesting a scholarly pursuit. His posture and the inclusion of a sword at his waist indicate a samurai youth, yet the playful appropriation of religious imagery reflects the wit and cultural sophistication common in the ukiyo-e genre. The background features a textured, grey-toned wash, which provides a neutral contrast to the muted palette of the figure's robes and the golden curls of the shishi. Harunobu is known for his slender, ethereal figures, and this print displays his characteristic approach to form and line. The composition balances the static nature of the seated figure with the rhythmic, swirling lines of the lion's mane, creating a sense of visual harmony. This print demonstrates the technical precision of the woodblock medium during the mid-eighteenth century. The registration of colours is exact, and the subtle gradations in the printing process add depth to the flat surfaces. By blending religious symbolism with the secular interests of the urban population, Harunobu created works that functioned as both art and social commentary. This piece remains a clear example of his ability to synthesise classical themes with the fashion and interests of his time, offering a glimpse into the artistic climate of eighteenth-century Japan.
