This woodblock print by Katsushika Hokusai (1760-1849) depicts the Yōrō Waterfall in Mino Province. It is part of the series *A Tour of Waterfalls in Various Provinces* (*Shokoku taki meguri*). Hokusai was a Japanese artist, ukiyo-e painter and printmaker of the Edo period. He is best known as author of the woodblock print series *Thirty-six Views of Mount Fuji* which includes the iconic print, *The Great Wave off Kanagawa*. The print presents a vertical composition. The Yōrō Waterfall cascades down from a height, appearing as a series of parallel blue lines. The surrounding landscape is rendered in shades of green and yellow, with trees clinging to the rocky cliffs. At the base of the waterfall, two figures with parasols are seen observing the scene. The water is depicted with fine white lines, suggesting movement and energy. The sky is a pale blue, providing a backdrop to the scene. The print is characterised by its use of colour and line to create a sense of depth and atmosphere.
