Claude Monet's 'Impression, Sunrise' (1872) captures the port of Le Havre at dawn with loose brushwork and emphasis on light and atmosphere, a defining work of the Impressionist movement.
Claude Monet's 'Impression, Sunrise', painted in 1872, is a seminal work of the Impressionist movement. It depicts the port of Le Havre, Monet's hometown, at dawn. The painting is characterised by its loose brushwork and emphasis on capturing the fleeting effects of light and atmosphere. Instead of precise details, Monet focused on the overall impression of the scene, using short, broken strokes of colour to convey the shimmering quality of light on the water and the hazy atmosphere of the harbour. The rising sun, a small but intense orange orb, is reflected in the water, creating a sense of movement and energy. The composition is relatively simple, with the focus on the interplay of light and colour. The industrial elements of the port, such as cranes and ships, are rendered in a hazy, indistinct manner, further emphasising the atmospheric effect. 'Impression, Sunrise' was first exhibited in 1874 at the first Impressionist exhibition, held in Paris. The painting's title, which was intended as a simple description, inadvertently gave the Impressionist movement its name after a critic derisively referred to the artists as "Impressionists".
