A refined Ukiyo-e woodblock print by Katsukawa Shunchō, depicting three women in a quiet domestic scene from the late eighteenth century.
This woodblock print by Katsukawa Shunchō depicts three women in a domestic setting, a characteristic subject within the bijin-ga genre of Ukiyo-e art. The artist, a member of the Katsukawa school, was active during the late eighteenth century and is recognised for his graceful portrayals of figures. The composition features three women engaged in quiet, everyday activities. One woman kneels, examining a small object, while another stands centrally, cradling a cat. A third woman stands to the left, adjusting a garment. The figures are rendered with slender proportions and elegant, flowing lines, typical of the aesthetic preferences of the period.
The print demonstrates the technical precision of Edo-period woodblock printing. The colour palette is restrained, relying on soft tones that complement the paper texture. The garments display varied patterns, from geometric designs to subtle floral motifs, which add visual interest without overwhelming the composition. The use of negative space allows the figures to occupy the frame with a sense of balance and calm. Shunchō often focused on the subtle interactions between his subjects, capturing a fleeting moment of leisure rather than a dramatic narrative event. The inclusion of the cat provides a touch of domestic realism, grounding the scene in the daily life of the Tatsumi district. This work reflects the artistic conventions of the time, where the focus remained on the depiction of contemporary fashion, posture, and the refined manners of women in urban Japan. The print serves as a record of the aesthetic values and social customs prevalent in the late eighteenth century, presented through the medium of the multi-block colour print.
