The work depicts the Moon Pine, a famous tree located at the Kiyomizu Kannon-do temple in the Ueno district of Edo, modern-day Tokyo. Hiroshige employs a bold compositional technique, using the curved trunk of the pine to frame the view of the Shinobazu Pond and the Bentendo temple below.

The print demonstrates the artist's mastery of perspective and framing. By placing the pine in the immediate foreground, Hiroshige creates a visual aperture that draws the eye toward the distant buildings and the water. The circular shape of the branch, which gives the tree its name, acts as a natural lens. The colour palette transitions from the deep indigo of the night sky at the top to the lighter, hazy tones of the horizon, suggesting the quiet atmosphere of a moonlit evening.
