A seminal Fauvist portrait by Henri Matisse, featuring his wife Amélie in a bold, non-naturalistic colour palette.
Henri Matisse painted Woman with a Hat in 1905, depicting his wife, Amélie. The work appeared at the Salon d'Automne in Paris that same year, where it caused a stir among critics and the public. The painting is a primary example of Fauvism, a movement defined by the use of non-naturalistic colour to express emotional states rather than descriptive reality.
Matisse applied paint in broad, visible strokes, often leaving areas of the canvas visible. The subject wears an elaborate hat, rendered in shades of blue, violet, and green. Her face is composed of patches of unexpected colour, including green and yellow tones, which deviate from traditional portraiture. The background consists of loosely applied blocks of colour that create a sense of space without relying on conventional perspective. By rejecting the academic standards of the time, Matisse prioritised the autonomy of colour and the physical application of paint.
The composition is direct, with the subject positioned centrally, looking towards the viewer. The lack of blending and the emphasis on flat planes of colour demonstrate the artist's interest in the expressive potential of the medium. This work remains a clear representation of the shift towards modernism in early twentieth-century French art, where the artist's subjective experience takes precedence over the objective representation of the sitter.
