A classic Ukiyo-e woodblock print by Suzuki Harunobu, depicting a woman gazing at the moon in a serene, domestic setting.
This woodblock print by Suzuki Harunobu depicts a woman in a domestic setting, often identified as the Heian-period author Murasaki Shikibu. Harunobu was a pioneer of nishiki-e, or brocade prints, which allowed for the use of multiple colours in a single image. This technical advancement transformed the medium, moving away from the limited palette of earlier benizuri-e prints.
The composition features a woman standing on a veranda, her gaze directed towards the moon. The scene is framed by architectural elements, including a sliding screen decorated with a landscape painting. The figure wears a kimono with a floral pattern, rendered with the delicate line work characteristic of Harunobu's style. The artist employs a flattened perspective, typical of the Ukiyo-e tradition, which prioritises decorative harmony over realistic depth. The soft, muted colour palette, dominated by shades of terracotta, cream, and grey, creates a tranquil atmosphere.
Harunobu's work often drew upon classical Japanese literature and poetry. By placing a figure reminiscent of Murasaki Shikibu in an Edo-period setting, the artist bridges the gap between historical literary figures and the contemporary audience of his time. The inclusion of the plum blossom branch and the moon provides a seasonal context, suggesting the early spring. The print demonstrates the artist's ability to balance human figures with their surroundings, creating a unified visual narrative. The attention to detail in the textile patterns and the subtle shading of the sky reflect the high level of craftsmanship involved in the production of these prints. This work remains a representative example of the aesthetic values prevalent in mid-eighteenth-century Japanese art.
