A refined surimono woodblock print by Keisai Eisen, featuring a symbolic stone draped in patterned fabric, accompanied by traditional Japanese calligraphy.
This woodblock print by Keisai Eisen belongs to the genre of surimono, which were privately commissioned works often exchanged among poetry circles in Edo-period Japan. Unlike commercial prints produced for the mass market, surimono utilised high-quality paper and sophisticated printing techniques, such as metallic pigments and embossing, to achieve a refined aesthetic.
The composition features a central, anthropomorphised stone marked with celestial symbols: a crescent moon, a full sun, and scattered stars. The stone is draped in a textile featuring a geometric tortoiseshell pattern, known as kikkō, which is further decorated with floral motifs. The juxtaposition of the rugged, natural form of the stone with the precise, repetitive patterns of the fabric demonstrates the technical skill of the carvers and printers involved in the production of such luxury items.
Surimono prints frequently incorporated kyōka, or mad verse, which are the calligraphic inscriptions visible surrounding the central image. These poems often contain puns or allusions related to the imagery, adding a layer of intellectual engagement for the recipient. Eisen, a prolific artist known for his bijin-ga (pictures of beautiful women), here displays his versatility in the realm of still life and symbolic design. The print reflects the cultural preoccupation with nature and celestial phenomena, presented through a lens of stylised abstraction. The muted colour palette, dominated by earthy tones and soft blues, maintains a sense of balance, allowing the viewer to focus on the interplay between the organic shape of the stone and the rigid geometry of the textile. This work provides a glimpse into the private artistic exchanges that flourished within the urban centres of nineteenth-century Japan.
