Kaihō Yūshō, a master of the Momoyama period, produced this work as a six-panel folding screen. The composition employs the classic Japanese aesthetic of negative space, where the expansive gold-leaf background provides a neutral, atmospheric void. This technique allows the viewer to focus on the delicate rendering of flora and rock formations, which appear to emerge from the mist.

The painting depicts a juxtaposition of seasonal elements. To the left, sparse, ink-washed bamboo suggests the chill of winter, while the central cluster of morning glories and foliage introduces the lushness of summer. The artist uses a restrained palette, relying on the contrast between the monochromatic ink brushwork and the subtle, muted greens of the leaves. The rock formation on the right provides a grounding weight to the composition, balanced by the airy, calligraphic lines of the bamboo branches that extend across the panels.

Yūshō was trained in the Kano school but developed a distinct style characterised by a more fluid, expressive use of ink. His work often reflects the influence of Zen Buddhism, prioritising simplicity and the capture of the essence of the subject over literal representation.
