A six-panel folding screen by Kaihō Yūshō, featuring a delicate arrangement of seasonal flora against a gold-leaf background.
Kaihō Yūshō, a master of the Momoyama period, produced this work as a six-panel folding screen. The composition employs the classic Japanese aesthetic of negative space, where the expansive gold-leaf background provides a neutral, atmospheric void. This technique allows the viewer to focus on the delicate rendering of flora and rock formations, which appear to emerge from the mist.
The painting depicts a juxtaposition of seasonal elements. To the left, sparse, ink-washed bamboo suggests the chill of winter, while the central cluster of morning glories and foliage introduces the lushness of summer. The artist uses a restrained palette, relying on the contrast between the monochromatic ink brushwork and the subtle, muted greens of the leaves. The rock formation on the right provides a grounding weight to the composition, balanced by the airy, calligraphic lines of the bamboo branches that extend across the panels.
Yūshō was trained in the Kano school but developed a distinct style characterised by a more fluid, expressive use of ink. His work often reflects the influence of Zen Buddhism, prioritising simplicity and the capture of the essence of the subject over literal representation. This screen demonstrates his ability to manage large-scale formats with a sense of quietude and precision. The application of ink varies from deep, saturated tones to thin, watery washes, creating a sense of depth without the need for traditional perspective. This piece is a fine example of the decorative yet meditative art produced for the elite residences of the late sixteenth and early seventeenth centuries in Japan, where the screen served as both a functional room divider and a contemplative object.
