A fine art print of a traditional Japanese Rinpa folding screen painting by Fukae Roshū, featuring figures in a stylised natural setting with gold leaf.
Fukae Roshū was a direct student of Ogata Kōrin, a figure who defined the Rinpa school during the Edo period. This work, titled Ivy Lane, demonstrates the characteristic aesthetic of the movement, which prioritises decorative composition and the use of metallic grounds. The scene depicts figures navigating a path amidst rocky outcrops and foliage, rendered with a deliberate flatness that emphasises the two-dimensional surface of the folding screen.
The application of gold leaf provides a luminous backdrop, creating a contrast with the muted, earthy tones of the rocks and the stylised vegetation. Roshū employs a refined brush technique, particularly in the depiction of the ivy vines and the flowing water, which suggests movement without relying on traditional perspective. The figures, dressed in period attire, appear as elements within a larger, carefully balanced arrangement rather than as the sole subjects of a narrative.
This piece reflects the Rinpa interest in classical Japanese literature and the natural world, filtered through a lens of high-level craftsmanship. The composition is divided across the panels, a common feature of the byōbu format, which allows the viewer to experience the scene as a continuous, unfolding sequence. The balance between the solid, opaque forms of the rocks and the expansive, reflective gold surface creates a sense of spatial ambiguity. This print captures the original screen's texture and the interplay between the mineral pigments and the metallic leaf, offering a clear view of the artist's approach to form and colour. It remains a representative example of eighteenth-century Japanese decorative painting, where the boundary between fine art and functional object is intentionally blurred.
