A classic ukiyo-e woodblock print by Utagawa Hiroshige depicting travellers caught in a sudden summer downpour at Shōno station. This work is a study of atmospheric perspective and movement from the famous Tōkaidō series.
Utagawa Hiroshige produced this woodblock print as part of his series, The Fifty-three Stations of the Tōkaidō. This specific work, titled White Rain at Shōno, depicts the forty-fifth station on the coastal road connecting Edo and Kyoto. It is a successful composition in the set. The scene captures a sudden summer rainstorm, known as hakuu or white rain, which catches a group of travellers on a steep slope. The composition relies on strong diagonal lines to convey movement and the force of the weather. Parallel lines of grey ink represent the driving rain, cutting across the scene at a sharp angle. In the foreground, two groups of people hurry in opposite directions. To the left, a palanquin is carried uphill by two porters, while a traveller follows behind. To the right, individuals wearing straw raincoats and wide hats descend the path. The figures lean into the wind, their postures indicating the physical effort required to navigate the storm. In the background, Hiroshige uses layers of grey and dark green to suggest a dense bamboo grove. The trees bend under the pressure of the wind, their forms rendered with soft edges to imply distance and the obscuring effect of the downpour. The colour palette is restrained, dominated by greys and browns. A single strip of blue along the path provides a point of contrast. The use of bokashi, a technique of hand-applying ink to the woodblock to create a gradient, is evident in the darkening sky at the top of the frame. This print demonstrates Hiroshige's ability to translate atmospheric conditions into a graphic medium. He avoids static representation, opting instead to capture a fleeting moment of human struggle against the elements.
