Nicholas Roerich, a Russian painter and explorer, spent his later years documenting the Himalayan region. This work captures the atmospheric conditions of high-altitude terrain, where mist clings to the slopes of the mountains. The composition features a stupa, a Buddhist monument, positioned in the foreground. Its presence provides a sense of scale against the vast, layered peaks that recede into the distance. Roerich utilised a specific technique involving tempera, which allows for the application of distinct, flat colour planes.
