A striking 1912 woodcut by Franz Marc, featuring a woman and two sheep rendered in a bold, simplified Expressionist style.
Franz Marc, a founding member of the Der Blaue Reiter group, produced this woodcut in 1912. The work demonstrates his interest in the synthesis of human and animal forms, a recurring theme throughout his career. Marc often sought to depict the spiritual essence of nature, moving away from objective representation towards a more symbolic visual language.
In this composition, the figures are tightly integrated within a vertical, rectangular frame. The stark contrast between the black ink and the negative space of the paper creates a bold, graphic quality characteristic of the German Expressionist woodcut tradition. The woman and the two sheep are rendered with simplified, flowing lines that suggest a harmonious connection between the human subject and the animal world. The forms are flattened, prioritising the rhythmic arrangement of shapes over anatomical precision or spatial depth.
Marc utilised the woodcut medium to explore the potential of simplified form and high-contrast imagery. By stripping away extraneous detail, he focused on the essential character of his subjects. The resulting image possesses a quiet, meditative quality, reflecting his desire to find a sense of unity in the natural order. This print is an example of the artist's graphic work, which often served as a parallel to his larger oil paintings. It captures the stylistic shift towards abstraction that defined his later output before his death during the First World War. The work remains a clear example of the formal experimentation that characterised the early twentieth-century European avant-garde.
