Zao Wou-Ki (1920-2013) was a Chinese-French painter, celebrated for synthesising Eastern and Western artistic traditions. Moving to Paris in 1948, Zao was influenced by European modernism, yet he retained a connection to his Chinese heritage, particularly the aesthetics of calligraphy and ink painting.
