Description
A striking woodblock print by Ohara Koson, 'Swooping Eagle' captures the power and grace of an eagle in flight, rendered with meticulous detail and subtle gradations of colour typical of the Shin-Hanga movement.
Ohara Koson (1877-1945) was a Japanese artist renowned for his bird-and-flower paintings (kachōga) in the Shin-Hanga style. This art movement, popular during the late Meiji, Taisho, and Showa periods, aimed to revitalise traditional ukiyo-e woodblock printing by incorporating Western influences and focusing on naturalistic representations. Koson initially trained in traditional Japanese painting, but later transitioned to woodblock printing, collaborating with publishers such as Watanabe Shōzaburō and Kawaguchi. He also worked under the name Shoson. His prints were particularly successful in Western markets. 'Swooping Eagle' exemplifies Koson's skill in capturing the dynamism and detail of birds in their natural surroundings. The print depicts an eagle descending from the sky, its wings spread wide and talons extended, ready to grasp its prey. The eagle's feathers are rendered with precision, showcasing the artist's attention to detail. The background features a soft, gradated wash, typical of ukiyo-e prints, which adds depth to the composition. A small yellow bird flits away from the eagle, adding a sense of movement and narrative to the scene. The composition is carefully balanced, with the eagle's powerful form contrasting against the delicate branches and subtle background.
