A detailed woodblock triptych by Utagawa Yoshitora depicting the Miyozaki pleasure district in Yokohama, capturing the urban transformation of the era.
This woodblock print by Utagawa Yoshitora depicts the Miyozaki pleasure district in Yokohama during the late Edo period. As a student of Utagawa Kuniyoshi, Yoshitora produced numerous works documenting the rapid modernisation of Japan following the opening of the port of Yokohama to international trade in 1859. This specific composition, a triptych, captures the structured layout of the brothel district, which was enclosed by a moat and accessible via a bridge.
The print displays the characteristic aesthetic of Yokohama-e, a genre focused on the arrival of foreigners and the changing urban environment. The architecture is rendered with a degree of geometric precision, contrasting with the stylised, cloud-like formations that frame the scene. These pink, decorative clouds serve to separate the various sections of the district, guiding the viewer's eye through the complex of buildings. The inclusion of figures walking along the bridge and within the district provides a sense of scale and daily activity.
Yoshitora employs a palette dominated by earthy browns for the wooden structures, balanced by the soft pink of the cherry blossoms and the deep blue of the water and sky. The composition is highly organised, reflecting the controlled nature of the licensed pleasure quarters of the time. The print serves as a visual record of the social and spatial organisation of Yokohama as it transitioned into a global trading hub. The attention to detail in the rooflines and the surrounding landscape elements demonstrates the technical skill involved in multi-block printing processes. This work offers a glimpse into the intersection of traditional Japanese printmaking techniques and the shifting cultural realities of the mid-nineteenth century.
