A serene woodblock print by Utagawa Hiroshige depicting a moonlit evening at the twenty-eighth station of the Kisokaido route.
This woodblock print depicts Nagakubo, the twenty-eighth station along the Kisokaido route. The scene captures a quiet evening atmosphere, defined by a full moon suspended in a cool, blue-toned sky. A wooden bridge spans the river in the middle distance, where silhouettes of travellers move across the structure. In the foreground, a man leads a pack horse along the riverbank, accompanied by a child and a dog. The composition balances the architectural elements of the bridge and the nearby building with the organic forms of the trees and the distant mountains. Utagawa Hiroshige produced this work as part of his collaboration with Keisai Eisen for the series 'The Sixty-Nine Stations of the Kisokaido'. The Kisokaido was an inland road connecting Edo and Kyoto, offering a different perspective from the coastal Tokaido route. Hiroshige utilised the traditional woodblock printing technique to achieve subtle gradations of colour, particularly in the sky and water. The print demonstrates his ability to convey atmospheric conditions through the use of limited colour palettes and precise line work. This print reflects the conventions of the Ukiyo-e genre, which focused on scenes of travel, daily life, and the natural world. The inclusion of specific geographical markers and the rhythmic placement of figures provide a sense of place and narrative. The work remains a representative example of the travel print genre, documenting the infrastructure and social activity of the Edo period. The use of blue pigments, characteristic of the era, provides a sense of calm and nocturnal stillness. Collectors of Japanese prints will recognise the stylistic hallmarks of Hiroshige, including his attention to spatial depth and the integration of human figures within the broader environment.
