A detailed seventeenth-century etching by Albert Flamen, depicting four roach on a riverbank with a fishing net.
This etching by Albert Flamen depicts four roach (Leuciscus rutilus) resting upon a riverbank beside a discarded fishing net. Flamen, a Dutch artist active in Paris during the mid-seventeenth century, produced numerous series of prints documenting European fauna. His work often combines scientific observation with the conventions of the Dutch Golden Age, where the natural world was frequently subject to meticulous study.
The composition balances the foreground subjects with a distant, atmospheric river scene. The fish are rendered with precise cross-hatching to capture the texture of their scales and the subtle curvature of their bodies. The inclusion of the net and the distant windmill provides a sense of place, grounding the biological subjects within a recognisable rural environment. The Latin and French inscriptions at the base, 'Leuciscus sive Mugil fluviatilis. Le Gardon', identify the species, reflecting the period's interest in taxonomy and the classification of nature.
Flamen's technique demonstrates a mastery of the etching needle. He uses varying line weights to differentiate between the soft, organic forms of the fish and the rigid, man-made structure of the net. The background is executed with lighter, more delicate strokes, creating a sense of distance and air. This print is a characteristic example of seventeenth-century printmaking, where the intersection of art and natural history allowed for the dissemination of knowledge through accessible, high-quality imagery. The work remains a clear record of the aquatic life found in European waterways during the period, presented with both technical rigour and aesthetic clarity.
