A precise ink and colour study of a needlefish by Nakajima Raishō, capturing the anatomical detail and fluid form of the specimen with traditional brushwork.
This study of a needlefish, or yagara, demonstrates the precise observational skills characteristic of the Maruyama-Shijo school. Nakajima Raishō, a Kyoto-based painter, focused on the accurate depiction of natural subjects, balancing scientific observation with the fluid brushwork traditional to Japanese ink painting. The composition is stark, placing the elongated form of the fish against a neutral, unadorned background. This choice directs the viewer to the anatomical details of the specimen, from the sharp, extended jaw to the delicate structure of the fins and the subtle shading along the body.
The artist employs a muted palette, using soft washes of grey, brown, and pale pink to suggest the texture and translucency of the fish. The eye of the needlefish is rendered with a distinct yellow tone, providing a singular point of focus within the otherwise monochromatic scheme. The calligraphic quality of the lines, particularly in the fins and the contour of the body, reflects the artist's training in traditional brush techniques.
Executed in 1870, this work dates to the final year of Raishō's life. It represents a late-career interest in the objective recording of marine life, a subject that gained popularity during the transition into the Meiji period. The inscription on the right side provides context for the creation of the piece, noting the date and the artist's age at the time. By stripping away environmental context, Raishō presents the needlefish as a specimen, prioritising clarity and form. This approach aligns with the broader interest in natural history that permeated the artistic circles of nineteenth-century Japan, where artists sought to document the physical world with both accuracy and aesthetic restraint.
