A refined Neoclassical engraving by Michele Bisi, depicting the mythological figures of Venus and Cupid in a serene, tender embrace.
This engraving by Michele Bisi depicts the classical figures of Venus and Cupid in a tender embrace. Bisi, an Italian engraver active in the early nineteenth century, demonstrates a high level of technical precision in his handling of line and tone. The work is based on the painting by Andrea Appiani, a painter who held a significant position in the Milanese art scene during the Napoleonic era. The composition follows the conventions of Neoclassicism, prioritising clear outlines, balanced forms, and a serene, idealised approach to the human figure.
Venus is seated, her form draped in soft fabric that contrasts with the smooth rendering of her skin. Cupid stands before her, his wings spread, creating a sense of movement within the static scene. The background features a gentle, rolling landscape that recedes into the distance, providing a quiet setting for the central figures. In the lower left, two doves are depicted, a traditional attribute associated with Venus. The engraving technique allows for a subtle range of greys, capturing the texture of the drapery and the soft light that illuminates the subjects.
Bisi was associated with the Accademia di Belle Arti di Brera in Milan, and his work often involved the reproduction of paintings by his contemporaries. This print reflects the period's interest in disseminating classical themes through high-quality graphic arts. The inclusion of the dedication to Prince Eugenio, Duke of Leuchtenberg, at the base of the print, indicates its status as a formal commission or a work intended for a refined audience. The clarity of the engraving ensures that the emotional connection between the mother and son remains the focus, presented with the restraint and grace characteristic of the Neoclassical aesthetic.
