A formal eighteenth-century engraving by Vincenzo Vangelisti, depicting the French Chancellor Henri François d'Aguesseau in a classical oval frame.
This engraving by Vincenzo Vangelisti depicts Henri François d'Aguesseau, a prominent French statesman and Chancellor of France during the eighteenth century. Vangelisti, an Italian engraver who spent much of his career in Paris, demonstrates technical precision in this portrait. The work is based on an original painting by Robert Tournières, as indicated by the inscription 'Tournières Pinx' at the base of the print.
The portrait is framed within a classical oval cartouche, a common device in eighteenth-century printmaking to provide a sense of formal structure. The subject wears the traditional attire of his office, including the distinctive wig of the period and the insignia of the Order of the Holy Spirit. Vangelisti employs a variety of hatching and cross-hatching techniques to render the textures of the fabric, the softness of the skin, and the voluminous curls of the wig. The background behind the oval frame is filled with horizontal lines, which creates a subtle contrast with the more complex modelling of the figure.
As a master of the burin, Vangelisti captures the gravity and authority associated with the Chancellor. The composition follows the conventions of aristocratic portraiture, focusing on the subject's dignified posture and direct gaze. The print serves as a record of the visual culture of the Ancien Régime, where such engravings were produced to circulate the likenesses of influential public figures. The clarity of the lines and the balanced tonal range reflect the high standards of the French school of engraving during this era. This piece is a fine example of the collaborative nature of print production, where the engraver translates the painter's original vision into a reproducible medium for wider distribution.
