Description

This Impressionist painting by Max Slevogt depicts a sun-drenched path beneath a leafy arbour, capturing the tranquil atmosphere of a garden with loose, expressive brushstrokes.

Max Slevogt (1868-1932) was a German Impressionist painter, known for his atmospheric landscapes and portraits. He, along with Lovis Corinth and Max Liebermann, formed the core of the German Impressionist movement, breaking from academic traditions to embrace a more modern style. Slevogt's work often captures fleeting moments and the effects of light and shadow, reflecting the influence of French Impressionism while maintaining a distinct German sensibility. 'Under an Arbour' exemplifies Slevogt's Impressionistic style. The painting depicts a sun-drenched path beneath a leafy arbour, with dappled light filtering through the foliage. The scene is rendered with loose, expressive brushstrokes and a palette of greens, reds, and earthy browns. Two cats, one black and one ginger, add a touch of domesticity to the scene. The composition invites the viewer to stroll down the path, experiencing the tranquil atmosphere of the garden. The benches and chairs suggest a space for relaxation and contemplation, further enhancing the sense of peace.

Artist Biography

Max Slevogt

Slevogt was one third of the "Triumvirate of German Impressionism", alongside Max Liebermann and Lovis Corinth. His Egyptian watercolours of 1914, painted during a trip to the Nile, represent the high point of German Impressionist colour: luminous, rapid, capturing heat and light with an urgency that the studio could never replicate.

He was born in Landshut, Bavaria, in 1868 and studied in Munich and Paris. He painted theatre scenes, plein-air landscapes, book illustrations, murals and opera stage sets. He died in 1932.
