A late-career portrait by Paul Gauguin, featuring two women in the Marquesas Islands rendered with flattened forms and non-naturalistic colours.
Painted during his final years in the Marquesas Islands, this work captures two women in a setting that reflects the artist's departure from European academic conventions. Paul Gauguin moved away from the naturalistic colour palettes of his earlier career, opting instead for non-representational tones that prioritise emotional resonance over optical accuracy. The skin tones of the subjects, rendered in olive and ochre hues, contrast with the deep blue of the dress and the warm orange of the garment worn by the younger woman. The composition is deliberately flattened, a technique Gauguin adopted from his interest in Japanese woodblock prints and cloisonnism. By removing traditional depth and shadow, he forces the viewer to engage with the figures as decorative elements within the frame. The background, featuring a simplified structure and foliage, acts as a stage for the two figures, who gaze directly at the viewer with a sense of stillness. The older woman, positioned on the left, wears a dark, patterned dress, while the younger woman on the right is draped in a lighter, simpler fabric. Their physical proximity and the gentle placement of the younger woman's hand on the other's arm suggest a quiet intimacy. This piece is characteristic of Gauguin's later period, where he sought to synthesise his observations of Polynesian life with his own stylistic preferences. The brushwork is broad and deliberate, avoiding the fine detail found in his earlier works. The painting remains a primary example of his attempt to create a visual language that felt distinct from the art of the Western world. It is held in the collection of the Metropolitan Museum of Art, where it is catalogued as a significant example of his late-career output.
