A pair of decorative panels by René Lalique, featuring two pigeons perched on thorny branches, rendered in silvered metal with Art Nouveau styling.
René Lalique, a figure synonymous with the transition from Art Nouveau jewellery to Art Deco glass production, demonstrates his mastery of form and texture in these Two Pigeons Panels. Originally conceived as decorative elements, the panels exhibit the characteristic fluidity of the Art Nouveau period. The composition features two pigeons perched amidst thorny branches, their forms rendered with a balance of naturalism and stylised grace.
Lalique often drew inspiration from the natural world, favouring birds, insects, and flora as subjects for his decorative objects. In this work, the silvered surface captures light across the relief, creating a play of shadow that defines the plumage of the birds and the gnarled texture of the branches below. The vertical orientation and the tapered shape of the panels suggest they were intended for architectural or furniture integration, a common practice for Lalique during his career as a designer for various luxury commissions.
Unlike his later, more geometric glass works, these panels retain the organic, flowing lines that defined his early output. The attention to detail in the feathers and the tactile quality of the metalwork reflect his training as a goldsmith. By focusing on the interplay between the smooth surfaces of the birds and the rougher, more irregular forms of the foliage, Lalique creates a visual rhythm that draws the eye across the surface. This piece provides a clear view into the aesthetic priorities of the early twentieth-century French decorative arts scene, where the boundary between fine art and functional design remained porous. The panels remain a representative example of his ability to elevate everyday materials through refined craftsmanship and a keen eye for naturalistic detail.
