A detailed study of a nineteenth-century leather album cover, featuring a deep green finish and precise gold-tooled floral borders.
This image presents the exterior cover of the Leclère album, a nineteenth-century collection of works. The object displays the craftsmanship typical of mid-century European bookbinding. The primary surface consists of a deep, forest-green leather, which has acquired a subtle patina through age and handling. The texture of the material remains visible, providing a tactile quality to the composition.
The perimeter of the cover is defined by a gold-tooled border. This decorative frame features a repeating motif of stylised floral rosettes linked by delicate, scrolling vine patterns. The precision of the gilding reflects the technical skill required for such ornamental work during the period. The central field of the cover remains intentionally plain, allowing the focus to rest upon the contrast between the dark, matte leather and the reflective, metallic border.
Such albums were common in the nineteenth century, often used to house collections of drawings, prints, or photographs. The design adheres to a restrained, formal aesthetic, prioritising balance and symmetry. The wear visible on the surface, including minor scuffs and variations in the leather tone, provides evidence of its history as a functional object. This print captures the material reality of the binding, offering a study in historical book design and the application of decorative gold leaf on organic substrates. It serves as an example of the period's preference for understated elegance in personal archives and library collections.
