A portrait by Paula Modersohn-Becker depicts two young girls standing near a birch tree, rendered in a simplified, expressive style with muted colours and loose brushwork.
Paula Modersohn-Becker was a German painter and one of the most important early Expressionists. Her brief but productive career bridged the gap between Impressionism and early Modernism. She sought to express subjective emotion through simplified forms and a direct, unidealised approach to her subjects. Her work often depicted peasant life, motherhood, and female nudes, all rendered with a distinctive raw honesty. She died at the age of 31, shortly after giving birth. Her work was later suppressed by the Nazis as degenerate art. In "Two Girls Standing on the Birch Trunk", two young girls are positioned close to a birch tree. The girl on the left wears a dark, almost black dress, while the girl on the right is dressed in a blue outfit with a hat. The background shows a flat, open field under a pale sky, possibly at dusk or dawn. The brushwork is loose and expressive, with visible strokes that add to the painting's immediacy. The colours are muted, contributing to a subdued, contemplative mood. The figures are rendered with a certain simplicity, typical of Modersohn-Becker's style, which aimed to capture the essence of her subjects rather than precise detail.
