A refined woodblock print by Matsuki Heikichi featuring two moorhens in a misty, atmospheric marshland setting.
This woodblock print, titled Twee waterhoentjes, captures two moorhens in a quiet, atmospheric setting. Matsuki Heikichi, a publisher and artist associated with the Shin-hanga movement, employs a restrained palette to evoke the stillness of a marshland at dawn or dusk. The composition relies on the contrast between the dark, solid forms of the birds and the soft, misty grey of the background, which suggests a shallow depth of field.
The birds are rendered with careful attention to their physical characteristics, including the distinct red frontal shields and beaks that provide the only sharp colour accents in the scene. The reeds at the right edge are depicted with delicate, calligraphic strokes, grounding the subjects within their environment without overwhelming the minimalist aesthetic. The use of bokashi, or colour gradation, in the background creates a sense of atmospheric perspective, typical of the technical refinement found in Japanese woodblock printing of this period.
As a work of Kacho-ga, or bird-and-flower painting, this print adheres to the tradition of observing nature with precision and poetic intent. The lack of excessive detail allows the viewer to focus on the posture and interaction of the two moorhens. The print reflects the transition in Japanese art during the early twentieth century, where traditional techniques were applied to subjects that balanced decorative appeal with a quiet, observational realism. The signature and seal of the artist are visible in the lower right, confirming the provenance of this piece within the broader context of the publisher's output during the Meiji and Taisho eras.
