Ohara Koson, a master of the kacho-ga genre, produced this woodblock print during the early twentieth century. The work depicts a solitary white heron standing on one leg against a stark, dark background. The bird is rendered with precise attention to its plumage and posture, while the surrounding environment is suggested through vertical white lines that represent falling rain. This minimalist approach creates a sense of stillness and quiet observation. Koson was associated with the shin-hanga movement, which sought to revitalise traditional Japanese printmaking by incorporating Western elements of light, shadow, and atmospheric perspective. Despite these influences, the print retains the essential qualities of the ukiyo-e tradition, focusing on the natural world and the fleeting moments of animal behaviour.
