A refined woodblock print by Katsushika Hokusai, featuring a heron amidst snow-covered pine branches with Mount Fuji in the background.
This woodblock print is a page from the second volume of Hokusai's celebrated series, One Hundred Views of Mount Fuji (Fugaku hyakkei). The title, Sanpaku no Fuji, translates to Three Whites, referring to the convergence of three distinct white elements within the composition: the snow-capped peak of Mount Fuji, the plumage of the heron, and the snow resting upon the pine branches.
Hokusai employs a monochromatic palette, relying on the subtle interplay of line and negative space to define the scene. The heron stands in the foreground, its form rendered with precise, delicate strokes that capture the texture of its feathers. The pine branches, heavily laden with snow, frame the bird and provide a textured contrast to the smooth, expansive silhouette of the mountain rising in the background. The composition is balanced, using the diagonal line of the mountain slope to guide the eye across the frame.
Published during the artist's later years, this work demonstrates his mastery of the woodblock medium. By limiting the colour range, Hokusai directs attention to the structural harmony of the natural elements. The print reflects his interest in capturing the essence of the Japanese landscape through a refined, graphic approach. The absence of heavy pigment allows the paper grain to contribute to the overall atmosphere, suggesting a quiet, winter morning. This piece remains a clear example of the artist's ability to synthesise observation with formal design, creating a balanced image that avoids unnecessary detail while maintaining a sense of natural presence.
