A classic Ukiyo-e woodblock print by Okumura Masanobu, depicting three elegant courtesans and a young apprentice in traditional Edo-period attire.
This woodblock print by Okumura Masanobu depicts a procession of three courtesans accompanied by a young kamuro, or apprentice. The composition is characteristic of the early eighteenth-century Ukiyo-e style, focusing on the elegance of the figures and the decorative patterns of their kimono. Masanobu was a significant figure in the development of the genre, known for his contributions to both print technology and the aesthetic refinement of the bijin-ga, or pictures of beautiful women.
The figures are rendered with clean, precise lines that define their postures and the folds of their garments. Each woman wears a kimono adorned with distinct motifs, including floral arrangements and geometric shapes, which demonstrate the artist's attention to textile design. The kamuro, positioned slightly behind the lead figures, provides a sense of narrative movement. The background remains minimal, allowing the viewer to focus entirely on the subjects and their attire. The print employs a monochromatic palette, typical of early sumizuri-e, where the visual impact relies on the contrast between the black ink and the paper surface.
Masanobu often experimented with perspective and composition, and this work reflects his ability to arrange multiple figures in a balanced, rhythmic manner. The print captures a moment from the Yoshiwara pleasure district, a common subject for artists of the period. By documenting the fashion and social customs of the time, Masanobu provides a window into the urban culture of Edo Japan. This print is a fine example of the technical skill involved in early woodblock production, where the clarity of the carved line dictated the quality of the final impression. The work remains a clear representation of the stylistic conventions that defined the early Ukiyo-e movement before the widespread adoption of multi-coloured printing techniques.
