Description

A dramatic oil painting by Henry Fuseli depicting the Norse god Thor in a tense confrontation with the Midgard Serpent.

Henry Fuseli, a Swiss-born painter active in London, produced this dramatic interpretation of Norse mythology around 1790. The composition depicts the god Thor in a small boat, poised to strike the Midgard Serpent with his hammer, Mjolnir. Beside him sits the giant Hymir, who appears fearful and passive, contrasting with the muscular, active posture of the deity. Fuseli employs a dark, moody palette to convey the turbulent atmosphere of the sea, using strong chiaroscuro to define the figures against the gloom.

Fuseli was known for his interest in the sublime and the supernatural, themes that align with the broader Romantic movement. His approach to the human form is highly stylised, often favouring exaggerated musculature and theatrical poses. This work demonstrates his ability to translate literary and mythological narratives into visual drama. The serpent, emerging from the dark waters, creates a sense of tension and impending conflict. The lighting focuses the viewer's attention on the central struggle, while the background remains obscured in shadow, adding to the sense of mystery and danger inherent in the myth.

This painting is a characteristic example of Fuseli's work, which often explored themes of power, terror, and the heroic. His training in Italy and his subsequent career in England allowed him to blend classical influences with a more personal, imaginative style. The work remains a compelling study of how 18th-century artists engaged with non-classical mythologies, moving away from traditional religious or historical subjects toward more visceral, emotive storytelling. The print captures the texture of the original oil paint, preserving the dramatic contrast between the illuminated figures and the surrounding darkness.

Artist Biography

Henry Fuseli

Fuseli reportedly ate raw pork chops before bed to induce nightmares for painting inspiration. The story may be apocryphal, but The Nightmare (1781), which shows a woman draped unconscious over a bed with an incubus squatting on her chest and a horse's head emerging from the darkness, suggests the method, if it existed, worked.

He was born Johann Heinrich Fussli in Zurich in 1741, the second of eighteen children. He was ordained as a minister in 1761 but forced to leave Switzerland after helping expose a corrupt magistrate. He spent eight years in Rome, changed his name from Fussli to the Italianate Fuseli, and arrived in London with a taste for the violent, the erotic, and the supernatural.

William Blake, not easily impressed, said of him: the only man that e'er I knew who did not make me almost spew. This was a compliment. Blake meant Fuseli was the only person who did not disgust him. Their friendship lasted decades. Fuseli married his model Sophia Rawlins in 1788. He became Keeper of the Royal Academy and grew increasingly conservative in his politics despite having started as a radical. He died in 1825, aged eighty-four, and was buried in St Paul's Cathedral.
