A detailed Neoclassical engraving by Ernst Morace depicting the Virgin Mary with the infant Jesus, Saint Anne, and John the Baptist.
This engraving by Ernst Morace depicts a classic religious scene featuring the Virgin Mary, the infant Jesus, Saint Anne, and the young John the Baptist. Morace, a German engraver active during the late eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries, demonstrates technical precision in his handling of line and tone. The composition follows the tradition of High Renaissance religious art, likely drawing inspiration from Raphael or his contemporaries. The figures are arranged in a pyramidal structure, a common device used to create balance and harmony within the pictorial space.
Saint Anne sits to the left, observing the interaction between the two children. The Virgin Mary occupies the centre, her gaze directed towards the infant Jesus, who reaches out to touch the face of John the Baptist. The figures are rendered with soft modelling, achieved through the careful application of cross-hatching and stippling. The background features a rocky outcrop and a distant, atmospheric landscape, which provides a sense of depth and scale to the scene. The inclusion of halos identifies the subjects as sacred figures, while the naturalistic treatment of their forms reflects the Neoclassical interest in clarity and anatomical accuracy.
Morace was known for his ability to translate the qualities of paintings into the medium of print. This work captures the delicate textures of fabric and the subtle play of light across the skin of the figures. The engraving is presented on paper with a wide margin, typical of the period's print culture. It serves as a study of form and narrative, capturing a moment of quiet intimacy between the figures. The work is a fine example of the reproductive printmaking techniques that allowed religious imagery to circulate widely during the nineteenth century, maintaining the compositional integrity of the original source material while offering a distinct monochromatic interpretation.
