A refined Mughal miniature by Manohar, depicting the Virgin and Child with angels, showcasing the synthesis of European iconography and Indian courtly style.
This work by the Mughal court painter Manohar demonstrates the cross-cultural exchange occurring within the imperial workshops of the late sixteenth and early seventeenth centuries. The composition depicts the Virgin Mary and the Christ Child, a subject introduced to the Mughal court through Jesuit missions and European prints brought by travellers. Manohar adapts this Western iconography into the stylistic framework of Indian miniature painting.
The central figures are rendered with delicate, flowing lines, characteristic of the artist's refined approach to portraiture. The Virgin is shown in a contemplative pose, seated upon a terrace, while angels attend to the pair with offerings. The background features a stylised tree and rocky outcrops, elements common to the period's aesthetic. The entire scene is framed by multiple decorative borders, including a wide outer margin embellished with gold leaf, which provides a sense of luxury and depth to the presentation.
Manohar was a prominent artist under the patronage of Emperors Akbar and Jahangir. His work often displays a high degree of technical precision, particularly in the handling of drapery and the subtle modelling of faces. This piece reflects the Mughal interest in foreign visual traditions, which were assimilated and reinterpreted to suit the tastes of the imperial court. The muted palette, dominated by soft earth tones and gold, creates a serene atmosphere. The inclusion of angels, depicted with wings and traditional Indian attire, illustrates the synthesis of disparate cultural motifs. This print captures the fine detail of the original manuscript page, preserving the texture of the paper and the application of gold leaf within the borders.
