This abstract painting by Hilma af Klint, 'The Ten Largest, No. 7, Adulthood', features floral and geometric forms in muted colours, reflecting her interest in spiritualism and abstract concepts.
Hilma af Klint (1862-1944) was a Swedish artist and mystic whose paintings are considered among the first abstract works in Western art history. She produced a body of work that predates the more widely recognised abstract compositions of artists such as Kandinsky and Mondrian. Af Klint believed that she was acting as a medium, channeling messages from spiritual guides to create her art. 'The Ten Largest' is a series of paintings created between 1907. They are large-scale works, executed in distemper on paper, then mounted on canvas. The series explores different stages of life. 'No. 7, Adulthood' features a composition of floral and geometric forms against a blue background. Wreaths of white and pink flowers float above a central orb containing the letters 'a' and 'u'. Curving lines connect these elements to a row of coloured circles at the bottom. The colours are muted, and the forms are simplified, creating a sense of otherworldly beauty. The painting reflects af Klint's interest in spiritualism and her desire to express abstract concepts through visual form.
