A detailed botanical engraving of a White Lily from Robert John Thornton's The Temple of Flora, featuring delicate hand-colouring and a classical background.
This botanical print originates from Robert John Thornton's ambitious publication, The Temple of Flora, issued between 1799 and 1807. Joseph Constantine Stadler, a German engraver active in London, executed the plate using a combination of aquatint and stipple engraving techniques. These methods allowed for the subtle tonal gradations and soft textures visible in the petals of the lily.
The composition places the White Lily in the foreground, rendered with scientific precision. The artist captures the plant at various stages of its life cycle, from the tight, upright bud at the apex to the fully opened blooms and the single fallen petal near the base. The background provides a contrast to the botanical subject, featuring a dark, textured tree trunk and a distant, classical rotunda set within a parkland environment. This inclusion of architectural elements was a hallmark of Thornton's project, which sought to elevate botanical illustration by placing specimens within dramatic, often romanticised settings.
Stadler's work demonstrates the technical skill required to translate the original paintings into reproducible prints for a wide audience. The hand-colouring applied to the engraving adds a layer of realism to the white petals, which are tinged with pale yellow at the throat and green at the base. The print serves as a record of eighteenth-century horticultural interests and the era's fascination with the systematic classification of the natural world. It remains a representative example of the high standards of British printmaking during the early nineteenth century, reflecting the collaborative efforts between botanists, painters, and master engravers to document the diversity of plant life.
