A detailed botanical engraving of the Begonia obliqua, originally published in Robert John Thornton's The Temple of Flora in 1801.
This print originates from Robert John Thornton's ambitious publication, The Temple of Flora, which appeared in parts between 1799 and 1807. James Caldwall, a skilled engraver, produced this plate after a painting by Philip Reinagle. The work depicts the Begonia obliqua, a species that fascinated eighteenth-century botanists due to its asymmetrical leaf structure and delicate floral display.
The composition follows the conventions of the era, placing the specimen against a dramatic, atmospheric sky rather than a neutral background. This choice reflects the period's interest in combining scientific observation with the aesthetic sensibilities of the picturesque. The stipple engraving technique allows for subtle gradations of tone, which are further refined by the application of hand-colouring. The inclusion of a butterfly adds a sense of movement and ecological context, a common feature in botanical plates of this time intended to suggest a living, breathing environment.
Caldwall's technical precision is evident in the rendering of the foliage and the translucent quality of the petals. The print serves as a record of the botanical discoveries that reached Britain during the late Georgian period, often sourced from expeditions to tropical regions. By isolating the plant from its natural habitat and presenting it in a formal, artistic manner, the creators invited viewers to appreciate the form and structure of exotic flora. This print remains a representative example of the intersection between scientific documentation and the decorative arts in the early nineteenth century.
