A detailed hand-coloured engraving by Hans Collaert the Elder, depicting the biblical punishment of the two elders from the story of Susanna.
This hand-coloured engraving by Hans Collaert the Elder depicts the final retribution from the Book of Daniel, specifically the punishment of the two elders who falsely accused Susanna. The composition follows the conventions of sixteenth-century Flemish printmaking, where narrative clarity is achieved through a structured arrangement of figures within an open, outdoor setting. The two accused men are bound to a central tree, their bodies rendered with anatomical precision, while the surrounding crowd observes the execution.
Collaert employs a clear, linear style typical of the period, using hatching to define form and shadow. The application of colour, likely added after the initial printing, provides a distinct separation between the foreground figures and the background architecture. The scene is framed by Latin text at the base, which provides the scriptural context for the event. This work is characteristic of the collaborative nature of print workshops in Antwerp during the late sixteenth century, where engravers often worked from designs by other masters to produce series of biblical or moralising narratives. The attention to detail in the clothing, the posture of the figures, and the inclusion of distant buildings reflects the interest in humanism and classical order that permeated Northern European art at the time. The print serves as a visual record of how moral lessons were disseminated through portable, affordable media during the Renaissance, allowing for the wide circulation of complex theological stories to a broader audience. The balance between the violent subject matter and the orderly, almost theatrical presentation of the scene is a hallmark of Collaert's approach to narrative illustration.
