Adriaen Collaert, a prolific Flemish engraver and publisher active in Antwerp, produced this work during the late sixteenth century. The composition follows the conventions of Northern Mannerism, characterised by a focus on narrative clarity and the inclusion of contemporary military attire, which anachronistically places the ancient figures within a sixteenth-century European context.

In the foreground, Abraham, dressed in classical-style armour, kneels to receive bread and wine from Melchizedek, the King of Salem. Melchizedek is depicted in priestly robes, holding a vessel.
