A classic Trecento panel painting by Taddeo Gaddi, depicting the miraculous moment Saint Francis receives the stigmata against a traditional gold-leaf background.
This panel painting depicts the moment Saint Francis of Assisi receives the stigmata, a central event in Franciscan iconography. Taddeo Gaddi, a primary assistant to Giotto, employs the stylistic language of the Trecento period to convey this miraculous encounter. The composition is organised around the diagonal relationship between the kneeling saint and the seraphic figure descending from the heavens.
Saint Francis is shown in a state of spiritual intensity, his hands and feet marked by the wounds of the Passion. The seraph, suspended in the gold-leaf sky, is connected to the saint by thin, red rays of light, a visual device used to represent the transmission of the divine marks. The setting is sparse, featuring stylised rock formations and small, schematic trees that provide a sense of place without distracting from the primary narrative.
To the right, a small, pink-toned chapel structure anchors the scene, offering a sense of architectural scale. The use of gold leaf as a background creates a flat, ethereal space, typical of the period, which directs the viewer's attention to the figures. Gaddi demonstrates a clear understanding of human form and emotional expression, moving away from the rigid Byzantine traditions of the previous century. The drapery of the saint's habit is rendered with soft, naturalistic folds, suggesting the weight and texture of the fabric. This work reflects the artistic shift towards a more humanised approach to religious subjects, a development that defined the Florentine school during the fourteenth century. The panel, originally part of a larger polyptych, remains a clear example of the technical skill and narrative clarity associated with Gaddi's workshop.
