Created in 1953, The Snail is a primary example of the cut-out technique Henri Matisse developed during his final years. Confined to his bed or wheelchair, the artist moved away from traditional painting, instead directing assistants to paint sheets of paper with gouache. He then cut shapes from these papers, arranging them into compositions. This method allowed him to manipulate colour and form directly, bypassing the brush.
The composition consists of various geometric shapes in primary and secondary colours, set against a white background with an orange border. The arrangement suggests a spiral movement, referencing the shell of a snail. Despite the simplicity of the individual components, the interaction between the shapes creates a sense of balance and rhythm. The work demonstrates the artist's focus on the relationship between colour and space, stripping away representational detail to reach a pure, visual language.
Matisse produced this work at the Hotel Regina in Nice. It is one of the largest works in his cut-out series. The scale and the placement of the coloured forms reflect his interest in the decorative potential of art. By using scissors as his primary tool, he achieved a precision of line that mimics the qualities of drawing. The work remains a clear demonstration of his ability to adapt his practice to physical limitations while maintaining his aesthetic rigour.
