The Seven Works of Mercy is a panel painting attributed to the Master of Alkmaar, a Dutch artist active in the early sixteenth century. This work forms part of a larger polyptych commissioned for the Holy Ghost Hospital in Alkmaar. The painting depicts the act of feeding the hungry, one of the seven corporal works of mercy derived from Christian tradition.
The composition is set within a contemporary Dutch urban environment, featuring gabled houses and a cobblestone street. The figures are dressed in the fashion of the period, which allows the viewer to connect the religious subject matter to the social reality of the time. A woman stands at the threshold of a building, offering bread from a basket to a group of needy individuals. Among them, a man seated on the ground with a crutch reaches upward, while others gather around to receive sustenance. The artist employs a clear, descriptive style, focusing on the interaction between the figures and the architectural setting.
The palette consists of muted earth tones, including ochre, brown, and soft greys, which provide a sense of grounded realism. The light is even, casting soft shadows that define the forms of the figures and the textures of their garments. The background architecture is rendered with attention to the verticality of northern European urban design, creating a sense of depth that draws the eye into the scene. This panel provides a window into the social and religious values of the early Dutch Renaissance, documenting the practice of charity as a public and communal duty.
