This work is a panel from the Herrenberg Altarpiece, a major commission by the German painter Jerg Ratgeb. The composition depicts the Flagellation of Christ within a complex architectural setting, characterised by a circular, multi-level structure that draws the eye through various stages of the narrative. Ratgeb employs a distinctively expressive style, common in the German art of the early sixteenth century, where figures are rendered with exaggerated gestures and physical intensity.

The central figure of Christ is bound to a column, surrounded by tormentors whose clothing and armour reflect the fashion of the period. Ratgeb uses a palette of earthy tones contrasted with sharp reds and greens to define the figures against the stone architecture. The spatial arrangement is unconventional, as the artist prioritises the emotional weight of the scene over strict linear perspective. The background features additional figures on staircases and balconies, creating a sense of a busy, public event. This approach allows the viewer to observe multiple moments of the Passion simultaneously, a technique often utilised in Northern European altarpieces to guide the faithful through the theological narrative.

Ratgeb was known for his involvement in the Peasants' War, and his work often carries a raw, unpolished quality that distinguishes it from the more refined Italian Renaissance works of the same era. The figures possess a tactile, almost sculptural presence, with heavy drapery and detailed facial expressions that convey suffering and cruelty.
