A satirical etching by James Ensor depicting a grotesque banquet scene as part of his series on the Seven Deadly Sins.
James Ensor, a central figure in Belgian modernism, produced this etching as part of his series exploring the Seven Deadly Sins. The work, titled 'La Gourmandise' in the artist's own hand, depicts a grotesque banquet scene. A central, corpulent figure consumes food with abandon, surrounded by skeletal attendants and bizarre, hybrid creatures. The composition is crowded, typical of Ensor's rejection of traditional perspective in favour of a chaotic, claustrophobic atmosphere.
Ensor utilised the etching medium to create sharp, nervous lines that define the distorted features of his subjects. The scene is filled with macabre details, such as the severed head on a platter and the pig-like creature looming above the diner. These elements reflect the artist's interest in the grotesque and his tendency to use caricature to critique human behaviour. The background contains a framed picture, which itself depicts a scene of gluttony, creating a recursive visual narrative that reinforces the theme.
This print demonstrates Ensor's technical skill with the needle, as he builds texture through dense cross-hatching and varied line weights. The work avoids the polished finish of academic art, opting instead for a raw, immediate quality that aligns with his broader interest in the darker aspects of the human condition. By presenting the act of eating as a monstrous, ritualistic event, Ensor transforms a common vice into a surreal, unsettling tableau. The print remains a clear example of his ability to blend social commentary with a highly personal, often disturbing, visual language.
