A stark, expressive woodcut by Ernst Ludwig Kirchner depicting the Baltic coastline near Staberhuk with bold, angular lines.
Ernst Ludwig Kirchner produced this woodcut during his time on the island of Fehmarn, a location that provided him with a respite from the urban pressures of Berlin. The work captures the coastal environment near Staberhuk, where the artist frequently observed the interaction between the Baltic Sea and the rugged shoreline.
Kirchner utilised the woodcut medium to distil the scene into its essential components. The composition relies on bold, angular marks to define the rocky foreground and the rhythmic movement of the water. A single boat occupies the horizon, its form simplified into sharp, geometric planes that contrast with the fluid, horizontal striations representing the sea. The sky is rendered with minimal, sweeping lines, maintaining the focus on the tension between the land and the water.
This print demonstrates the artist's approach to form during his Expressionist period. Rather than seeking a realistic depiction, Kirchner prioritised the emotional resonance of the subject. The high-contrast black ink against the paper creates a stark visual experience, typical of the Die Brücke group's interest in the graphic potential of woodblock printing. The rough, unrefined quality of the lines reflects the physical act of carving into the wood, preserving the immediacy of the artist's hand. This piece offers a direct view into Kirchner's fascination with the primitive and the elemental forces of nature, stripped of unnecessary detail.
