This is a detail from Frans Hals's 1664 painting, *The Regentesses of the Old Men's Almshouse, Haarlem*. Hals (1582-1666) was a Dutch Golden Age painter, principally of portraits. He is notable for his loose painterly brushwork, and helped introduce this lively style of painting into Dutch art. He also painted genre scenes and some history paintings. This detail captures three of the women who served as regents of the almshouse. They are dressed in the severe black clothing and white ruffs of their station. The composition is dark, with the figures emerging from a shadowy background. Hals's brushwork is particularly evident in the rendering of the hands and faces, giving the figures a sense of immediacy and presence. The detail also includes a table with a ledger and other administrative objects, alluding to the women's duties.
