Frans Hals
The Laughing Cavalier is neither laughing nor a cavalier. The man in the painting is twenty-six, his identity unknown. On his embroidered sleeve are bees, flaming torches, lover's knots and arrows: symbols of courtship, suggesting this was a betrothal portrait. The title was invented by a Victorian critic in 1888, two hundred and sixty years after Hals painted it. This kind of productive misunderstanding follows Hals around.

Biography
He was born in Antwerp but his family fled to Haarlem during the Fall of Antwerp in 1585. He stayed in Haarlem for the rest of his life, painting the people who lived there: militia officers, preachers, regents, fishwives, lute players, drinkers, and children who would not sit still. He painted them all as though they had just turned to look at him.
He studied under Karel van Mander the Elder, a painter and biographer who had written the Dutch equivalent of Vasari's Lives. But where Van Mander valued careful finish, Hals developed a technique closer to sketching in oil. He painted fast, leaving visible brushstrokes that looked spontaneous and unfinished by the standards of his time. The later portraits, painted when he was in his seventies and eighties, are so loose they anticipate Impressionism by two centuries.
He taught Judith Leyster, who became a significant painter in her own right and married another of his students, Jan Miense Molenaer. Five of Hals's own sons became painters. He was married twice, had at least ten children, and was in constant financial trouble. Like Rembrandt and Vermeer, he saw his possessions sold at auction for debt. From 1661 the Haarlem authorities granted him a yearly pension to keep him alive.
