Vincent van Gogh's 'The Red Vineyard' captures the intensity of the harvest season in Arles, France, with bold colours and expressive brushwork. This Post-Impressionist painting is a striking example of Van Gogh's unique style.
Painted in November 1888, 'The Red Vineyard' is believed to be the only painting Van Gogh sold during his lifetime. It depicts labourers harvesting grapes in a vineyard near Arles, France. Van Gogh had moved to Arles earlier that year, hoping to establish an artistic community. The painting is characterised by its bold use of colour and expressive brushwork, typical of Van Gogh's style. The scene is bathed in the warm light of the setting sun, which casts long shadows across the field. The figures are rendered with thick, impasto strokes, giving them a sense of weight and presence. The overall effect is one of energy and movement, capturing the intensity of the harvest season. The composition is divided into three distinct zones: the foreground with the workers, the middle ground with the vineyard, and the background with the river and the setting sun. This division creates a sense of depth and perspective, drawing the viewer into the scene. The painting is now part of the collection of the Pushkin State Museum of Fine Arts in Moscow.
