A detailed woodblock triptych by Utagawa Yoshitora depicting a bustling Victorian-era London waterfront through the lens of Japanese Yokohama-e.
This woodblock print by Utagawa Yoshitora belongs to the genre of Yokohama-e, a category of Japanese prints produced during the late Edo period. These works documented the arrival of foreigners and the appearance of distant lands following the opening of Japanese ports to international trade. Yoshitora, a student of Utagawa Kuniyoshi, captures a Japanese interpretation of the British capital, blending factual observation with stylistic conventions common to the Ukiyo-e tradition.
The composition is presented as a triptych, showing a bustling waterfront scene. On the left, large sailing vessels are moored near a pier, while the centre and right panels focus on the activities of the local population. Figures in Victorian-era attire, including top hats and crinoline dresses, populate the foreground. A horse-drawn carriage and mounted soldiers provide a sense of movement. In the distance, the skyline of London is rendered with a flattened perspective, featuring architectural silhouettes that suggest the dome of St Paul's Cathedral.
The colour palette relies on the characteristic pigments of the era, with deep Prussian blue dominating the water and sky, contrasted by muted earth tones and touches of red in the clothing and flags. The print serves as a record of how Japanese artists visualised the West during a period of rapid modernisation and curiosity. The inclusion of a cartouche containing Japanese text provides context for the viewer, explaining the geography and customs of the depicted location. This work demonstrates the fascination with foreign technology and fashion that defined the Yokohama-e movement, offering a unique perspective on global exchange during the nineteenth century.
